Highlights
of Dance-Workshop My Guru,
Jhelumtai Paranjpe, conducted an Odissi Dance Workshop, from 8th
May to 22nd May, 2004. When I came to know about the workshop, I
immediately enrolled my name. I had a faint idea about the regular schedule of
the workshop. Everyday, we
started with the Namaskara and warming-up
exercises. Then, the basics of Odissi, such as Chowk and Tribhangi steppings
were taught. For the beginners, it was a new learning experience. Then we
proceeded to items like – Mangalacharan;
Vasant pallavi; and Batu. Other items like Mohana Pallavi; Aravi pallavi
Bat-Chad and Khamaj Pallavi were also taught. The breaks included
refreshing lemon Sharbat; excellent lunch with buttermilk, bananas and tea. After lunch, we
used to have a session of Mudras
in Odissi. Using the Mudras, we had to enact something, and the
others had to identify, what it was. All this, combined with the wonderful
teaching style of Jhelumtai, was just great. On the 23rd
of May, we had a presentation function, comprising whatever we learnt in the
workshop. A special feature was that the students themselves sang for the
items for which they were not dancing. The function was really enjoyable and
nice. Next time,
whenever there is such a workshop, I suggest that all of you – young and
old, to join it and enjoy it, as I did.
